  6. <JOHN.MAIHOS> In my opinion, when you are applying to a temp agency...
  7. <JOHN.MAIHOS> you should list as many experiences as possible.
  8. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It will be their job to market you accordingly....
  9. <JOHN.MAIHOS> However, when you are interviewing
  10. <JOHN.MAIHOS> for a specific position I suggest you tailor the resume
  11. <JOHN.MAIHOS> to that position.
  12. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Is that what you've done?
  13. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Well, I have kept my temp resume to one page so I am
  14. sure I have left things out.
  15. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I suppose you cant' list -everything-.  :)
  16. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Heck, I worked in a sub shop once.
  17. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I don't list it anymore.
  18. <JOHN.MAIHOS> (I assume you know what subs are.)  :)

  20. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> John do you feel that resumes have any real value except
  21. when applying for a specific job?
  22. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John Don't you want to list as much as possible to perk
  23. the interest and possible job assignments with the temp agency?
  24. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Little unclear on "shop" though. ;)
  25. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Yes.  List everything.
  26. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You see, my resume isn't geared to a temp agency.
  27. <[David] D.MEYER1> Hi, Mike.

  30. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I think resumes are important for -all- of us to have.
  31. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I have mine and keep it up to date.
  32. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I'm not in the job hunting market right now..
  33. <JOHN.MAIHOS> but things have a way of changing when we least suspect it.
  34. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If I was applying to a company..
  35. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I -would- send a resume tailored for that company.
  36. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John Why don't you introduce yourself for everyone.
  37. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I don't buy into sending only a cover letter to "peak" interest.

  39. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I am personnel director for a group of newspapers located in
  40. Massachusetts.
  41. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Our firm has papers all over the country.
  42. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I've been in personnel for 10 years now.
  43. <JOHN.MAIHOS> In management for 16.
  44. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Enough on me.
  45. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Does everyone know you, Mike?
  46. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> No not yet.
  47. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> I'm a personnel systems consultant that...
  48. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> specializes in writing Handbooks, job descriptions, etc.
  49. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> our Company has been in existence for 7 years in the
  50. midwest.

  53. <JOHN.MAIHOS> While I don't profess to be an expert....
  54. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I can give you my perspective from a personnel director's point
  55. of view.
  56. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> John, I like to tailor my resume to each job that I'm
  57. applying for, but how would you suggest one could make a resume stand out.  I
  58. have trouble believing that each of the hundred plus resumes that come in are
  59. actually read
  60. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Usually the cover letter is going to be your
  61. <JOHN.MAIHOS> best place to catch my attention.
  62. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I read all resumes.
  63. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Generally I don't read all the "clips" that people send.
  64. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Give me a good opening line in your cover letter and I'll read
  65. further.
  66. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Otherwise, it's just a quick scan.
  67. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Which brings up the question on "who" should write the
  68. resume.....
  69. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> The person involved...
  70. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> John, how many resumes do usually receive for an advertised
  71. position?
  72. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> or a professional resume writer?
  73. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Gee Mike, does your question inspire you to answer?
  74. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> My feelings are.....
  75. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> the first time, find some one that is good at writing
  76. resumes....
  77. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Most of us are not good at selling ourselves to
  78. perspective employers.
  79. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Comments?
  80. <[Tony] A.MENARD1>  Mike are you suggesting a professional writer?
  81. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I agree with the selling aspect.
  82. <JOHN.MAIHOS> People are usually too humble.
  83. <[David] D.MEYER1> I agree. That's why I bought computer software to get some
  84. ideas and assistance in writing my resume.
  85. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Since I have been running my own company for 5 years &
  86. only infrequent other work, who do I use as professional references
  87. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> I still remember my first resume that was written by a
  88. professional....
  89. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Initially I wondered who they were talking about...
  90. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Was your name spelled right?
  91. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> but further reading the wording and verbiage used was
  92. tailored to me.
  93. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> My degree was changed on my 1st "pro" resume.
  94. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> In what way VFM?
  95. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> Upward I hope  hehehe
  96. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Well, kinda sideways, from history to English.
  97. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Interesting.  Did you have a double major?
  98. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> if my school had allowed it, yes. History and business.
  99. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I see...O.K.....
  100. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> kinda rough  situation.
  101. <JOHN.MAIHOS> someone asked..
  102. <JOHN.MAIHOS> How many resumes I receive on an advertised position.
  103. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Generally it depends on where I advertise.
  104. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If I stay local, I get
  105. <JOHN.MAIHOS> somewhere between 5-30.
  106. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I know...that's quite a range.
  107. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I get around 40 unsolicited resumes per week.
  108. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I don't think that's many in the newspaper business.
  109. <JOHN.MAIHOS> But it exceeds the number of position I have opened.
  110. <JOHN.MAIHOS> There was another question....
  111. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> David you had a question about software to write resumes.
  112. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> there are often as many as 200 or more resumes received for
  113. an advertised position.  I really can't believe they are all read.
  114. <JOHN.MAIHOS> VFM man asked about references too.
  115. <[David] D.MEYER1> I have several questions...
  116. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> I asked RE references.
  117. <JOHN.MAIHOS> It depends on the firm.
  118. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You can see by the numbers that I can handle my volume.
  119. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Larger firms have people who specialize in hiring.
  120. <JOHN.MAIHOS> When 200 resumes are received...
  121. <JOHN.MAIHOS> there is usually a quick qualifier.
  122. <JOHN.MAIHOS> By that I mean a KEYWORD.
  123. <JOHN.MAIHOS> or KEY experience.
  124. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If it's not seen, you get passed by.
  125. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Only on a second pass might a "hidden" talent be found.
  126. <JOHN.MAIHOS> That's why Mike might suggest you use a professional.
  127. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Since I have run my own firm for 5 years who do I use
  128. for professional references? Except for some few temp assignments, I have not
  129. had a boss in 5 or 6 years.
  130. <JOHN.MAIHOS> That's the question I remember!
  131. <JOHN.MAIHOS> You must have customers!
  132. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> John do you feel that references should be included in the
  133. resume?
  134. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Sure.
  135. <[Tony] A.MENARD1> Hi James
  136. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Professional references can certainly be good customers.
  137. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> True, folks who advertise in my magazine. But how does
  138. it look to my customers if I am out looking for additional work?
  139. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Heck, you gotta pay the bills!
  140. <[James] J.CLARK91> I think that the personal computer has made it a most
  141. "fortunate" time to be unemployed... double edged sword.
  142. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I'd suggest you only us an advertiser who is familiar with your
  143. position.
  144. <[James] J.CLARK91> It gives opportunities for work, and makes it easy to look
  145. good in work.
  146. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If you write articles....
  147. <JOHN.MAIHOS> you can always use a contact as a reference.
  148. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Someone who was happy with your work.
  149. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Okay, another thought, what about "action words" in
  150. resumes? Everyone seems "dynamic,...etc."
  151. <JOHN.MAIHOS> True!
  152. <JOHN.MAIHOS> But those type words work.
  153. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> I do write articles & interviews. Film reviews mostly.
  154. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Not "dynamic" perse
  155. <JOHN.MAIHOS> but other action verbs are good.
  156. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Not "wacky" I suppose? ;)
  157. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Dynamic isn't a verb anyway!
  158. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Completed.

  163. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> I said "words", not verbs. :) Mom was an English
  164. teacher.
  165. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I know, but I said verb.  It was my error I was correcting.

  177. Color is Your Parachute"
  178. <[David] D.MEYER1> for VFW, I have a friend in a similar situation about
  179. references.
  180. <[Roger] RGLARSON> Is this discussion 'pseudo' moderated?
  181. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Yes.
  182. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> VFM, I get calls for the VFW every month. :)
  183. <[David] D.MEYER1> He is using people that were customers but have moved to
  184. other positions.
  185. <[David] D.MEYER1> Just a thought. Now for my questions ...

  187. <[David] D.MEYER1> How about length? I am applying for technical positions. Is
  188. it okay for my resume to be more than one page in length?
  189. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I generally don't recommend resumes that are more than 1 page...
  190. <JOHN.MAIHOS> but for a technical position, the rules can change.
  191. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I've seen 6 page resumes in such positions.
  192. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Most resumes for technical positions average 2 pages.
  193. <JOHN.MAIHOS> 6 is too many.
  194. <[Janet] J.ATTARD> John, what about for writers with lots of publications to
  195. list?
  196. <JOHN.MAIHOS> 2 to 3 MAX is O.K.
  197. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I like to see supplements.
  198. <JOHN.MAIHOS> WORKS PUBLSIHED
  199. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> In what form John?
  200. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Just an easy-to-read form.
  201. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Not too busy.
  202. <[David] D.MEYER1> I have heard that writing resumes on non-white paper (like
  203. light gray) makes it stand out. Is there any truth to that?
  204. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Excerpts, complete articles?
  205. <JOHN.MAIHOS> First David....
  206. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> sp, excerpts.
  207. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Certain colors are perfectly acceptable.
  208. <JOHN.MAIHOS> White, gray, off-white, (I like light blue too.)
  209. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Nothing like a bright color though.
  210. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> <-- Rejects fluorescent orange resumes. Call me fickle.
  211. <JOHN.MAIHOS> The off-white is generally called Ivory I think.

  213. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Depending upon the job applied for....
  214. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Gray can be  a down color...
  215. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> doesn't really help to sell you in the process.

  220. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> Oh, you mentioned "supplements".
  221. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Yes I did.
  222. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> spaces take so much time & space in this crowded,
  223. hectic world. ;)
  224. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> What is a supplement John?
  225. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> What form of supplements in terms of writer's product?
  226. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I'd say a supplement is an extra page you'd send with your cover
  227. letter and resume.
  228. <JOHN.MAIHOS> If you have many articles to list, it might be used.
  229. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Article title, where published, when published, etc.
  230. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> In my case it's virtually an entire magazine.
  231. <JOHN.MAIHOS> In that case, send a copy of the magazine if you can.
  232. <JOHN.MAIHOS> Possibly under separate cover.

  236. <[David] D.MEYER1> This is another comment. Since I have a computer, I decided
  237. to use it to my advantage and bought some resume software. It helped me with
  238. formatting and examples of resumes and cover letters.
  239. <[(VFM Man)] D.DEATON3> He's a more specific question related to John's
  240. business.
  241. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> What kind of response have you had Dave?
  242. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> From the resumes sent out?
  243. <[David] D.MEYER1> Fair. about 5% response. 1 interview. 1 offer being
  244. negotiated.
  245. <JOHN.MAIHOS> I suppose if you get the job, the software was worth it!
  246. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> Do you feel that the software helped you to develop your
  247. resume?
  248. <[David] D.MEYER1> Will be for me! 8-)>
  249. <[Mike] M.HOLZSCHU1> and get the negotiation ?
  250. <[David] D.MEYER1> I definitely think it helped. I had no real idea of how to
  251. format it.

  255. resumes or more often informal or business contacts
